After introducing a lifetime performance score, Haier, Samsung, and Fisher & Paykel washers have seen their ratings drop in Consumer NZ ratings. This is to ensure that consumers buy durable appliances. Paul Smith, Consumer NZ’s product tester, stated that it is no longer enough for products to perform well only when they are brand new. After 50 years of testing, the watchdog has concluded that many modern appliances work well when they are new. However, some devices were not made to last.

Smith announced the most significant change in product testing since the 1960s. Appliances would still be evaluated on performance but would now be measured on reliability, owner satisfaction, and repairability. The lifetime scoring system was applied to upright and standard vacuum cleaners and washing machines. The new scoring system would be extended to all products, beginning with large appliances samsung nz parts. Only models that meet these three criteria will be recommended.

Consumer NZ recommended 17 washing machines out of 49 it tested. It was limited to “as new” performance and came from six brands.14 models were chosen from four brands to receive lifetime scoring. This puts an emphasis on durability and “as new”. Smith stated that some of these models had not been recommended previously. Smith noted that Samsung and Haier had lower scores than Samsung due to poor customer satisfaction ratings and owners reporting them as less durable.

The efficiency of Fisher & Paykel models was not as high. Electrolux washing machines scored higher because they were more efficient in water and energy, while LG, Miele, and Bosch remain unchanged at recommended. Smith stated that “generally, not all models from these brands were rated highly because our testing is still focused on the performance of a specific model.”

The reliability and satisfaction data are different for each brand. Smith stated that Consumer NZ was the world’s first consumer organization to recommend durable appliances that work well over time. He said that the new criteria for testing had taken a while to develop. This decision was made after consumers’ feedback in its annual reliability survey revealed that appliances are not as durable as they once were and were becoming more challenging to repair.

“This means shoppers pay for unnecessary replacements, and the planet produces by another appliance ending its life at the tip. We need to view waste as a design flaw. While recycling is important, it’s not the only way to divert materials away from landfill. Smith stated that we need products that can be reused, repaired, and refurbished. Future lifetime performance scores will include repairability. This measures how easy it would be to repair a defective product.
